Cornell University released an update regarding the Canine Influenza Virus in the Midwest. They conducted research that has shown the strain of influenza virus in the Chicago area is a different strain than originally thought. The article states that it is unknown at this time whether or not the influenza vaccination offers any protection against the strain of Canine Influenza in the Midwest. The recommendation at this time is to keep your dog away from high exposure areas such as dog parks and grooming facilities.

Symptoms include high fever, loss of appetite, coughing, discharge from the eyes and nose, and lethargy. Cats can also be affected by this virus. If your pet is showing any of these symptoms please call your local veterinarian immediately.

Starting next week Laketown Animal Hospital will carry the Canine Influenza Virus vaccination. Several boarding facilities in our area are now requiring the vaccine. We do not require it for animals boarding at our facility, however it is available for owners who want it. If you would like more information please call us at 529-4211. An exam with a veterinarian is required in order for your pet to receive the vaccine.
